What's the role?:
Traffic Data Science is part of HERE Technologies, a global leader in mapping and location technology with over 40 years of experience. The team collects and analyzes traffic data from billions of GPS signals, vehicle sensors, and live incident reports. This produces accurate, real-time information about traffic flow, road conditions, and incidents.
The team uses big data and analytics to improve mobility, safety, and travel efficiency. Their predictive traffic models and live updates help reduce congestion and prevent accidents. These tools support drivers, city planners, and businesses in making data-driven decisions for smoother travel.

About the Role:
We’re seeking a Data Scientist to strengthen our mapping and traffic intelligence platform. You’ll build and deploy machine learning models that interpret real-world mobility data, improve routing accuracy, and predict traffic dynamics. Your work will directly enhance navigation, traffic forecasting, and map quality systems used by millions of users.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, train, and deploy ML models for traffic prediction, routing, and congestion detection
  • Analyze large-scale geospatial datasets from GPS, connected vehicles, and public traffic sources
  • Develop map-matching, road segmentation, and anomaly detection algorithms
  • Build scalable data pipelines for spatial and temporal data ingestion and cleaning
  • Optimize model performance and accuracy through experimentation and feature engineering
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to integrate models into mapping and analytics systems
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to technical and business stakeholders
Who are you?:
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master’s in Data Science, Computer Science, Transportation Engineering, or related field
  • Experience in applied machine learning or data science
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL
  • Hands-on experience with ML frameworks (scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow)
  • Experience working with geospatial libraries (GeoPandas, Shapely, GDAL) and spatial databases (PostGIS, BigQuery GIS)
  • Solid understanding of spatial statistics, time-series modeling, and routing algorithms
  • Familiarity with distributed data tools (Spark, Databricks) and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  • Ability to translate ambiguous research questions into structured analytical approaches
  • Strong technical writing and communications skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with traffic simulations (SUMO, MATSim) or transportation optimization
  • Background in navigation, mobility platforms, or smart city analytics
  • Familiarity with visualization and mapping tools (Kepler.gl, Deck.gl, Mapbox, Power BI)
  • Experience operationalizing ML models in production environments
