I cannot speak for other departments but the NOC (in Southlake, TX) has a long history of bad managers. Unrealistic productivity/ work expectations (KPI) - the time given for tasks vs. the time needed to do the job well, is way off. The NOC technician used to do alarm monitoring, field support, troubleshooting, resolution, software loading, etc... Now it is essentially alarm watching and ticket creation. It went from the backbone of the network to an internal customer support group that just looks at alarms, answers phones, and creates tickets. It is a good way to get your foot in the door of Verizon Wireless if that is what you want but do not plan on staying long. The NOC is looked down on by many other groups. Verizon Wireless and Verizon seem to be averaging about 2 layoffs per year for the last few years. The company used to be a really great place to work but has lost its way. There are a LOT of people actually putting in volunteer requests to get laid off. These are young people, not people about to retire. That says a lot about the company. Hopefully, VZ/VZW will find its way back to being a great place to work.
